Tony Turner Biography
Tony Turner first became aware of the power of music as a youngster at the end of the 60's folk revival. With his ears glued to the radio he connected with the power of a simple folk song. He also connected to the lakes, river and rural landscape that later returned as themes his music. In those formative years both folk and rock had their influence but singer/songwriters were always the main attraction. Artists such as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Steve Goodman and Willie P. Bennett were strong influences. He fed on this musical stew by covering songs while performing in a folk-rock trio, a band, a folk duo, and later as a solo performer.
Tony tapped into his own powerful creative energy after joining Writers' Bloc, Ottawa's songwriters' collective. The songs and stories began spilling out of him like a spring flood. Soon after he wrote the anthem Circle of Song, a musical tribute to that nurturing group.
After a period of honing his craft and building an impressive repertoire of material, Tony recorded his 2002 debut CD, A Matter of Time produced by Canadian folk music icon Ian Tamblyn. The disc is a compelling mix of sometimes dramatic, sometimes tranquil and occasionally amusing tales. An "undeniably impressive first recording" cites Roddy Campbell of Penguin Eggs, Canada's national folk and roots magazine.
An award-winning Ottawa songwriter, Tony now plays regularly in Ontario and beyond. He still belongs to Writers' Bloc, organizes songwriting workshops, benefits and other performance events involving the Ottawa songwriting community. In addition Tony has been the driving force behind several recording projects, most notably 'Christmas Goose' a 2003 studio CD of original winter holiday songs featuring fellow Ottawa area songwriters.
