First Annual Yule Duel

Spirit of Rasputin’s Presents Spirit of Tony Turner Award Showcase

The Spirit of Rasputin’s, Ottawa’s folk music society, is proud to announce the 2024 edition of this annual award ceremony. Well-known singer/songwriter Tony Turner returns to Ottawa from the west coast as performer-host.

The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Spirit of Tony Turner Award, affectionately called the SofTTie, to Anne-Marie Brugger in honour of her many years supporting musicians and connecting them with audiences. Anne=Marie is familiar as host of the CKCU radio program, Canadian Spaces.

This year, the event will showcase musical talent hand-picked by Anne-Marie. Expect an eclectic mix of lyrical and sonic surprises, with performances by Tara Holloway, Christine Graves, Brent Smith, OK Naledi and of course, Tony Turner. Ann Downey will accompany on upright bass.

This is an event not to be missed – a celebration of Ottawa’s vibrant musical culture.

Spirit of Rasputin’s Presents Spirit of Tony Turner Award Showcase

The Spirit of Rasputin’s, Ottawa’s folk music society, is proud to announce the 2024 edition of this annual award ceremony. Well-known singer/songwriter Tony Turner returns to Ottawa from the west coast as performer-host.

Tony Turner Trio

The Tony Turner Trio - that’ll be Arlene Carson, Joe Spinelli and yours truly will play a one hour set of my original tunes starting at 12 noon. We’ll be on the on the Vitals Stage in Charles Hoey Park right by the rail line. Lots of other live music all afternoon and evening to enjoy.
The 39 Days of July is a free summer music festival in downtown Duncan showcasing over 350 musical acts programmed by the one and only Longevity John Falkner.

Tony Turner Trio

I am excited to play this first length show featuring my trio. We've been working up many of the songs that will be featured on my upcoming recording due out later this year. Expect lyric driven stories anchored in the folk/roots tradition, with touches of blues and pop. Several songs often have a twist of humour. If you've attended one of my shows, you know what I mean. I'll be on acoustic guitar, harmonica and lead vocals, Arlene Carson on piano, accordion & supporting vocals and Joe Spinelli on upright bass. Tickets are $20. Tickets can be reserved in advance using the instructions on the GET TICKETS link below. I hope you are able to spend a few Sunday afternoon hours watching live music or spend more time in Duncan. There are many lovely independent shops and restaurants in the downtown area.

Tony Turner Trio & The Co-conspirators

This is a shared show featuring the Tony Turner Trio and the Co-conspiritors. While anchored in the roots tradition, the trio’s repertoire has touches of blues and pop and the songs often have a twist of humour. The Co-Conspirators is a Hemmingford, QC based duo playing folk/singer-songwriter music with elements of country, rock, blues, gospel, bluegrass, spiritual, and general roots music. Ticket are only $15 and available at the door.

The Tony Turner Trio are featured at this month's edition of the Coffeehouse on Gabriola (CoG). Joining Tony on stage are Arlene Carson (accordion, piano and vocals) and Joe Spinelli on upright bass. Admission of $10 at the door. Note: the start time listed is for the trio's feature performance. A jam session begins at 6:30 pm followed by an open stage at 7 pm and then the feature performance at 9 pm.

The Peripheral Visionairies

The Peripheral Visionaries perform nearly forgotten but timeless country and swing tunes from the 1920’s through to the '60s. This 4-piece band includes Tony Turner on guitar, Mike Sadava on mandolin & lap steel, Arlene Carson on accordion & piano and Tony Di Gregorio on upright bass. Featuring impeccable three-part harmonies, this Vancouver Island quartet make something new out of tunes you forgot were classics. Sundays at the Victoria Folk Music Society start with a jam session at 6:30 pm followed by an open mic at 7:30 pm, an intermission at 8:45 and then the band as the featured act starting at 9 pm. Admission is only $8. Hope to see our Victoria friends this Sunday!

Sjef, Carmel and Arthur will also be honoured as recipients of the Spirit of Tony Turner Award for 2020, 2021 and 2022 — recognition of the service each has given to the Ottawa-area folk music community.

The Peripheral Visionaries

The Peripheral Visionaries play an eclectic mix of standards, country swing, and jazzy tunes from the 1920's to the 60's, and some originals thrown in just for fun. I am happy to be the featured performer kicking off the first post-lockdown season of the Nanaimo Folk Connection. This time I get to play in a trio format with Arlene Carson on accordion, piano & supporting vocals and Joe Spinelli on upright bass. The evening starts with an open mic segment, a refreshment break and then I hit the stage at about 8:15 pm . Only $5 to get in (pay at the door). There is ample parking on site.

Crop Circle Concert & Fundraiser

The Cline Farm, 2090 Skaha Rd., Nanaimo

Crop Circle is a new annual summertime celebration of music, arts, culture, inclusion and local food, hosted on a historic Nanaimo farm. This year the event is launching with two talent-packed concerts on Saturday, August 6th.

There will be 10 concerts running from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Crop Circle is co-presented by Growing Opportunities Farm Community Cooperative and the Nanaimo Association for Community Living. Join us on the Cline Agri-Health Centre Farm for this special concert series and learn more about our programs that provide skills training and work experience for people with barriers to employment, and nutritious food for people who need it.
